1. The First Year Research Task: Structure of crisis in the 1990’s. ( Aug. 2002 – Jul. 2003)

 ● The Field of Political economy: 1990’s Prolonged depression and the changes in the political system in Japan during the 1990’s.
   -Crisis of Japanese financial policies in the 1990’s: Focusing on policies       concerning bad bond disposal
   -Analysis on the characters and causes of the Japanese financial crisis in 1990’s.    -Change in Japanese enterprise power and the relationship between the state and       enterprises in the 1990’s.
   -Prolonged depression in the 1990’s and changes in pattern in the business world       to exercise pressure on politics in Japan
   -Change in the Japanese economic structure and understanding the policies       concerning its investment in Korea.
   -Comparison in process of the Japanese economic crisis: Focusing on the 1930’s       and 1940’s 

● The Field of Politics: the collapse of a 55-year old system and the changes in politics
  -Political leadership in Japan: its character and limitations
   -Electoral and party system under a 55-year old system
   -Comparison and evaluation between the solitary political system of the Liberal       Democratic Party and the political system by coalition
   -Comparison and evaluation of the structural causes of Japanese foreign policy

● The Field of Society and Culture: the small government and the rise of civil society in Japan
  -Rise of civil society contributing to offer public service in Japan
   -State and development of 생애학습: autonomous ‘공민관’ activity of citizens
   -Woman’s representation (적정대표성) and equalization of civil society in Japan
   -Formation of public area (공공영역의 형성과정) and rise of civil society in the       modern age of Japan
   -Being Information-oriented from the 1990’s onward and the change of civil society       in Japan

2. The Second Year Research Task

● The Field of Political economy: the re-establishment of economic policy and the reconsideration of its efficiency and competitiveness
  -Financial reform in Japan: The Political cause of policy changes
   -Overcoming the financial crisis and the political progress in financial reforms
   -Institutionalization of the relationship between the state and enterprise in the 21^st       century: Focusing on revising commercial law
   -Restructuring and compensation of the distribution industry in Japan
   -Problems and prospects of economic cooperation between Korea and Japan
   -Comparison in polices of each political force to overcome the Japanese       economic crisis: Focusing on the 1930’s and 1990’s

● The Field of Politics: the re-establishment of the national policy and the structural reform
  -Reform of the party system: Liberal Democratic Party and the opposition
   -Reform of the Japanese electoral system and change in its policy
   -The attitudes of Japanese politician toward the problem concerning political funds       in the 90s: reform of system and reality of politics
   -Overview of relationship with U.S.A and decision-making process for policies in       Japan
   -Reforming the system of central government
   -Reforming the system of the Diet: Comparison study between Korea and Japan

● The Field of Society and Culture: the social change into an aging society
  -Prolonged depression in Japan and its reform on employment
   -Regional society’s measures for an aging society
   -Collapse and reconstruction of the traditional social system:
      Focusing on the village community

[The SIJC Seminar]

1. Purpose
  -Investigates the current situation of Japanese studies in terms of politics, political       economy and society & culture.
   -Compare Korea’s research on Japan with recent research done in Japan,       Europe and America with further expectation of its possible direction 
   -Academic interchange among members in the Sejong Institute Japan Center

2. Process
   -Report and discuss the recent situation in Japan once every two months
   -Time: 10 a.m. on third Saturday of each month
   -Place: The Round-Table Seminar Room at the Sejong Institute

[Situation and prospect]
   - HakJin research team for Japanese regionalism: M.A. & Ph.D. seminar

1. Purpose
  -Investigates the current situation of Japanese studies in terms of politics, political      economy and society & culture and further prospects its direction in the future.
  -Help develop research capabilities of graduate students and make academic      network
  -Data-base of research on the present situation in Japan

2. Process
  -Report and discussion every other month (the starting date: 2002. Sept.28)
  -Time: Seminar was held on the fourth Saturday in Sept., Nov., Jan., Mar., May.      and July.
  -Place: Seminar room of Japan Center, 3^rd floor of Sejong Institute
  -After Seminar: Contents to be reported and discussed during the seminar and      data made by research is uploaded on the homepage of the East-Asia Research      Team
  -Presenter should prepare research data and handouts for presentation

3. Schedule

 Adjusts researcher’ works and examines the progress of each research

[The administrative meeting]

 Adjusts research task among the researchers for each team, examines the progress of academic meetings and workshops, and checks over the research results in advance.
 Discuss publishing research reports according to the decision of the Research Evaluation Committee.
